7 Signs that You Need a Roof Repair

Updated: Oct 3, 2018

As a homeowner, there are several regular maintenance tasks that we need to perform on our home to keep it in the best shape possible. These range from tending to the garden to cleaning the gutters. However, one thing that many homeowners forget to regularly check is the roof. Roof repairs are very important. When roof issues are noticed early on, it could save you hundreds to thousands of dollars. On the other hand, if you have a damaged roof that goes unattended, it could cause severe structural damage to your home and cost a fortune. Don’t let this happen to you! Here are 7 warning signs that you need a roof repair:

Damaged shingles

If your shingles have cracks, are dark or wet, are curling up at the edges or are missing altogether, chances are you need a roof repair. If your shingles are damaged, they are likely nearing the end of their 15 year life span and if they are dark or wet, it means that water is being trapped under them.

Roof debris in the gutters

Asphalt shingles, among others, begin to flake as they age. These granules, which look and feel like black sand, oftentimes fall off the shingles and into the gutters. If you notice these flakes in your gutters, it means your shingles are getting old.

Peeling paint

Peeling paint on the interior of your attic could indicate that it isn’t a well-ventilated area, meaning that your roof isn’t doing its job. If your roof needs a repair and isn’t ventilating your home sufficiently, moisture can get trapped and cause paint on the inside of your home to peel.

Damage around roof openings and fixtures

If you have chimneys, vents or pipes protrude through your roof, some damage around these openings can happen over time. However, if your home is older and you’ve never had this wear and tear damage fixed, it’s imperative that you do so.

Sagging

If your roof has a leak, it can cause the roof deck to sag. Roof decks- when in good condition- are always straight, so if yours is sagging, it means that there is water damaging the roof itself.

Interior water damage

Discoloration on your ceiling or water stains are likely the result of an insufficient roof. Tiny cracks or leaks in your roof can cause water to enter your home and damage both upstairs floors and ceilings.

Presence of mould or moss

While mould or moss may not seem like a cause for alarm, they can have a negative effect on tiles and shingles. Bacterial growth can squeeze in between tiles on your roof and push them apart, letting water into your home and causing significant damage.

Many people see a small issue with their roof and don’t think much of it. However, a small roof problem could be a warning sign of a much bigger problem. Don’t ignore the condition of your roof.
