Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Plumber

Hiring a plumber is no small task. When you hire someone to work on your home, whether it’s a plumber or a window cleaner, you need to trust them with the well-being of your home. It’s crucial that you have a good relationship with those who service your home or you will only be disappointed by the end result. If you hire a plumber without checking their ratings, reviews, credentials and abilities, you have no way to verify whether they can do the job they claim to be able to. It’s admirable that some people always try to see the good in others- it’s a wonderful quality. However, if you use this quality when entering business agreements and don’t verify who you hire, you could risk damage to your home, loss of money and a waste of time. Here are a few of the important questions you should ask a plumber before hiring them to work on your home:

Are you licensed?

This is quite possibly the most important and telling question that you can ask. Unfortunately, many homeowners assume that everyone operating a plumbing business has the proper license to do so. This isn’t the case. Many plumbers operate without a license, which means that their work may not be high quality and could fail inspection.

Are you the one doing the work?

Many larger plumbing companies employ several workers at different levels of experience. They may send out a more experienced plumber to assess your home’s damage and give you an estimate, but can then send a younger, less experienced plumber to perform the work. Always ask who will be working on your home and inquire about their level of experience and their qualifications.

Do you have insurance?

If a plumber doesn’t have proper insurance, it could mean that, should anything go wrong, the homeowner is responsible for all costs associated with the damage. Good plumbers will also typically offer a warranty on their work in case something goes wrong after they work on your home. If this is the case, make sure you have the warranty in writing.

All of these questions help verify a plumber’s abilities. If you don’t thoroughly investigate a plumber before hiring them, you could run the risk of them being underqualified and inexperienced. These kinds of plumbers, while they may be well meaning, can cause serious and potentially irreversible damage to your home. Use this questions as a way to protect yourself, your family and your home.
