The Most Common Autumn Plumbing Problems

Autumn is a beautiful time of the year. The leaves begin to change shades of rust and red, the temperature is warm with a cool breeze and there is the refreshing feeling that comes along with a change in season. Most people do a light version of their usual “spring cleaning” routine in the autumn and tackle the basic things: making sure your heating unit works, sealing cracks in the windows and underneath doors, trimming the trees, and so on. However, one of the most important items on everyone’s autumn cleaning checklist should be making a call to the plumber. There are several plumbing issues that are common during autumn; if these issues aren’t handled immediately, they could cause some serious damage. As a homeowner, it’s crucial that you are aware of these issues so that you can prevent them from causing severe damage to your home. Here are the most common autumn plumbing problems:

Frozen and burst pipes

Along with autumn comes colder temperatures. When temperatures drop, the water inside of pipes can freeze and expand, causing the pipes to burst. You may assume that frozen and burst pipes are only common problems in the winter, but with any sudden decrease in temperature- like from the scorching summer heat to the cool autumn temperatures- the pipes can slightly freeze. The easy solution to this problem is to insulate the pipes, which we at Greg Mitchell have ample experience with.

Broken water heater

The decrease in temperature that occurs in autumn means that the water entering your water heater system is colder than it was in the warmer months. When cold water enters the system, the water heater has to work twice as hard to warm the water, which can sometimes cause the water heater to break or malfunction. It needs to be inspected by a plumber to ensure that the pipes are properly insulated and that the water heater is functioning properly.

Blocked drains

As we mentioned before, autumn is a beautiful time of the year, partly thanks to the leaves changing colors and falling off the trees. We may all have fun walking in the crunchy leaves on the sidewalk, but do you have any idea the kind of damage they can do to your drains? The excess amount of leaves on the ground combined with the autumn winds can blow the leaves right into your drains, causing them to be blocked. Blocked drains are dangerous because they obstruct the water flow, which can result in moldy water and burst pipes.

While autumn is a beautiful and relaxing time of the year, it’s important to remember to do a comprehensive autumn cleaning routine. Winter is quickly approaching and the cold weather is something th

at everyone should prepare for extensively. One of the most important things to do in the autumn is to call a plumber for a routine inspection. Greg Mitchell Plumbing is only a phone call away.
